About
The Gambia Film School (TGFS) is a non-profit organization founded to provide free basic education and cinematography training in The Gambia, the smallest country in mainland Africa.
It all begins with a bond. Fabio Colombo, the school’s founder, has known The Gambia since he was a boy. It was here that he met Haddy, his wife, and built his family. Over the years, The Gambia has become his second home.
From there, an idea. Having worked as a colourist for more than twenty-five years, Fabio noticed that the Gambian film industry is still in its early days, with few professional opportunities and even fewer chances of structured training for those who want to make it their career. A sector that is still taking shape brings its share of time and challenges, but it is also a rare opportunity: it allows something unique to be born.
– The Gambia Film School.
We want to offer a cinematography education that is free, comprehensive, and open to the world. Teachers with international experience work alongside local experts to offer a wide range of workshops and classes, from which young people can draw to develop a style of their own. From film history to courses covering every stage of production and post-production, we offer a complete training that includes directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, colour grading, sound design and much more.
Today the school is a project in the making. We are working hard to bring it to life as soon as possible. That is why everyone who joins us matters: a contribution, a piece of advice or a collaboration today becomes part of our story from the very beginning.
Our Goals
The four core pillars of our mission.
Free education
Granting the students a free basic education and cinematography training.
Empowerment
Create opportunities for young people to develop careers in the film industry.
cultural preservation
Encourage the documentation of The Gambia’s own culture and stories through film.
community
Utilize film and video productions as a tool to develop the whole community.
nurturing talent
TGFS offers free educational courses, focusing on students from underserved communities and giving young talent access to necessary skills without financial barriers. We firmly believe in equal opportunities for all.
culture and identity
We believe in a Gambian cinema rooted in the remarkable variety of stories, languages and traditions of this country. TGFS encourages young people to document and share their own culture in a language of their own that speaks to the rest of the world.
career development
We offer mentorship and networking opportunities, connecting students with professionals from the local and international film industry. Our goal is to support their professional growth and their careers in the film industry.
creative economy
TGFS aims to contribute to the growth of the community on a cultural and economic level. By connecting talent and sharing stories, together we can build a thriving film community in The Gambia.
